Tesoro Cultural Center
Seeks Educators
Posted June 29, 2010
Tesoro Cultural Center is seeking
retired teachers and history buffs that have an
interest in Colorado history and enjoy working
with students in a unique environment to serve
as educators for a school program. K-12 Educators
at Tesoro lead student groups through The Fort,
the first replica of Bent’s Old Fort (located
just off 285 and Highway 8, in Red Rocks Territory
in Southwest Denver), as well as teach audiences
about historical figures and life as a fur trader
through the interactive trunk show program.
The school program is designed to
engage Colorado students in the living history
aspects of the Bent’s Fort (1833-1849) historical
period. Bent’s Old Fort was a privately
owned international trading center for trappers,
traders, meeting place for military expeditions,
businessmen, from many cultures including French,
British, American, African American, Mexican and
Spanish settlers, as well as many native tribes
including the Arapahoe, Ute, Cheyenne, Kiowa,
Lakota Sioux and Pawnee. This “melting pot”
of cultures is an important aspect of Colorado
history that the Tesoro Cultural Center teaches
students.
The Tesoro Cultural Center’s
goal of the school program is to reach out to
students, and by extension, the school administrators
and community to educate them about the rich culture
of the Early West and their importance of the
history of Colorado. In so doing, we hope to increase
knowledge and respect for all peoples.
Educators have a choice to be compensated
either through mileage reimbursement or $25 per
hour. If interested you’ll be invite to
observe a school tour in progress, meeting several
of our other educators/interpreters. For more
information about Educators at Tesoro Cultural
Center contact Carolyn Doran, Program Coordinator,
